My top pick: Santorini sunsets in Oia, Acropolis in Athens, street gyros.
Planning a trip to South Africa? Start with these destination notes. The capital is Pretoria (executive), the main languages are 12 official, incl. Zulu, Xhosa, English, and the approximate population is 62 million.
My top pick: Table Mountain in Cape Town, Must do a safari, Stellenbosch is better than Napa Valley
It depends on the region. Cape Town and the Winelands are best from November to March, the dry summer. For safari in Kruger and the northeast, May to September is the dry winter, when animals gather around water and are easier to spot.
Kruger National Park is the classic choice: self-drive with rest-camp stays, or a guided lodge in a private reserve such as Sabi Sand. Malaria-free options include Madikwe and the Eastern Cape reserves. Book lodges and park camps well ahead for the dry season.
