I loved Montenegro's Fjord-like bays, mountain monasteries, and warm Adriatic beaches.

You want the Adriatic coast with fewer crowds than Croatia
You like hiking, canyons, and old stone towns
You want to combine beaches and mountains in one short trip
You like cheap and efficient healthcare - don't ask me how I know.
Must-visit places:
Kotor: Walled old town and the climb to the fortress above the bay
Perast: A baroque village with two islets offshore
Durmitor National Park: Glacial lakes and the Tara River Canyon
Budva and Sveti Stefan: Beaches and an island village
Lake Skadar: Birdwatching and boat trips
Must-try foods:
Njeguški pršut: Smoked ham from Njeguši village
Kačamak: Cornmeal with cheese
Black risotto and grilled fish on the coast
Vranac red wine and rakija

The name means "Black Mountain."
The Tara River Canyon is one of the deepest in Europe.
Montenegro regained independence in 2006.
